ABOUT THE HOTEL

THE BAR

The Corbie Bar, as we call it, was completely refurbished last year (2003) and is thus named as a result of our long association in Fort Augustus with the former Benedictine Abbey and School which adopted the image of the corbie as the School badge.

The association with St. Benedict, who at the time had been living a hermetic existence for some years, came about when a group of monks, whose Abbot had recently died, approached him and invited him to become their new abbot.

Some of the monks however did not approve, and placed poison in both the bread and wine which he was offered. When St. Bendict made to bless these items the wine glass shattered, and a corbie (raven) flew off with the bread thus foiling the plot.

Members of both the MacLellan and Stephenson families attended the Abbey School, and established many lasting relationships with parents, students and the Abbey's community.

So, if you please, enjoy a drink or two in our bar - maybe even a Bendictine after your meal!- and if you are interested you can then quiz Johanna and Chris on the history of both the Abbey and School.

There is NO SMOKING allowed within the hotel buildings.
